Oedipus Rex by Sophocles
Having the reading material in possession, Dr. Edwin must have thought that we have read the play by now. However, I profoundly believe that, after the kick starts he had given us on the play, most of us start to browse through the play right after that. This week, students who were seating on the left area of the class were asked to imitate the way Oedipus Rex would have been walking based on their own interpretation.
Of almost 15 students tried to imitate, only one was close enough to real deal. He was walking a little limp, and not as what I had expected a king should have been walking like. These tiny details eventually made sense as it actually altered my point of view on the king himself. I was at first, thought that as a king, Oedipus would have been walking with his head up high, with arrogance in his looks, however, this was not the case when he could not only walk up right, rather, he needed a staff to help him walk.
Dr. Edwin had also made a point for us to pay close attention to the terms such as wisdom and wise, the significance of hands and eyes and the irony in the play especially on sight and blind.
I can't agree more with you, angelic. It is so 'memorable' moment for all of us that among the 15 students only had one person 'walked' it right! Even I myself also did not pay attention to the important trait of Oedipus who had club foot, though after reading the whole play. it was actually the key point that leaded him to the truth.
ReplyDeleteThrough such a simple activity, the clever Dr. Edwin actually tested our true understanding on the main character, Oedipus. I believed that he wanted all of us to learn from this lesson and pay closer attention when we study a play. I think smart study is actually what he wants. =)
